WebcamMax - A Great Easy- to-use Tool
10.1.09
Look, I'm a 62 year old webbie, an occasionally grumpy webmaster who doesn't have much patience with hard to install and difficult to use software. And this program is GREAT!!!
After a long day of testing (and in the case of livestream.com, repeatedly crashing) the 3 prime suspects for my next webcast event, it came as a breath of fresh air to be led to this software (more about that in a minute), to easily find its download link (oh,how I hate sites that have incompetent navigation that makes you take forever to find what you are looking for), and then to install it without a problem (and I hate even more installers that hijack every setting on my box, and come bundled, like those thieves at Sun/Java do, with some useless, intrusive toolbar).
Well, WebcamMax (and I am beginning to think of it as good ol' Max, by now) has it right...from the git go.
But wait, there's more!!! I definitely am not one of those who read the freakin' manual BEFORE I grab my mouse...I need to see if the software I am about to use is intuitive, and then figure out what I need to read up on when I do visit the documentation (and I do, also, go back and read the readme and help files after hammering away for a while with most new tools).
Well, lemme tell ya, this little puppy came to me with me having only one task that really needed to be accomplished. I wanted to stream pre-recorded video from my desktop via either Ustream or Justin (and Ustream seems to have won the day for my webcasting despite some annoying little quirks to their recent interface update).
Anyway, took me about 5 minutes to figure out how to get what I wanted working, and another 5 or so to convince myself that I still had control of how I managed my Webcam, if I wanted to revert to using the Logitech interface.
For my purposes, the other paintbrush-like functions may not have any utility, but we will see. A quick grab of the tools seems to imply I should go read a bit from the help files (which amazingly enough, seem to be clear, written in understandable English by someone with an understanding of how to write an algorithm).
For sure, the screen grab function is marvelous! I build content management interfaces for individual clients, that are tailored to their skills, and this looks like I could save me a road trip to lean over their shoulder while I show them how to "select" and "cut and paste" (most clients aren't that bad, but I do have a few).
I came upon this wonderful addition to my webmaster's toolkit by a wonderfully serendipitous path. I am a motorsport nut, and have been watching some great video replays of this year's Formula 1 season at Justin.tv. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how the folks who webcast these things (and at a reasonable time of day, too, since European races tend to be on the air at dawn, beside being on a network I don't get). Well, a little searching at the forums, and lo, and behold, Max, my new best friend came into my cyber-life. And just as my wonderful client, Professor Louie, in Woodstock, NY was asking me to start webcasting and archiving music from his backwoods studio!!! (coming soon at crowmatix.com)
So don't let the cute mascot/icon throw you, this is serious, easy to use, and very afforably prices software.
For what it is worth, Webcam Max has to be a relative of Monsters, Inc. star Mike Wazowski
