As the decade of the 1950's came to an end, Porsche AG continued to evolve as a manufacturer, and had built its commercial success upon the 356 model range.
In mid-1958 the Speedster was retired. It was renamed the Convertible D (the D referring to its body builder, Drauz, in Heilbron, Germany), and uprated with a new, higher windshield, roll-up windows, regular coupe-type seats and a roomier top. The body and chassis of the Convertible D were the same as the Speedster, but the refined cockpit made the car far closer to the Porsche ideal of everyday, all-weather use so central to the marque’s image in Europe. The 356A Cabriolet continued as Porsche’s touring, rather than performance, model.
Throughout B-series production from 1959 until 1963, Porsche introduced arguably the most significant developments ever made to the 356. Improvements were focused on handling, ride comfort and refinement while the already sparkling performance and world-beating reliability were further enhanced. B's were built in two basic formats, the T-5 bodied version, which was current between September 1959 and August 1961, and the T-6, built between September 1961 and July '63. Initially available in either Coupe or Cabriolet configurations, the B also marked the arrival of a new body style as the Roadster replaced Porsche's much-loved Speedster (and Convertible D).
For knowing 356 collectors, the Roadster is a natural choice, representing the last of the Speedster line with almost all of the 356B improvements. Subtle differences distinguish the Roadster from the Convertible D. A chrome-framed windshield, different doors, a different rear cowl and a different top combine to create a lighter and sportier look.
Technical upgrades included bigger oil pumps, stronger connecting rods, improved shift linkages, finned brake drums, tapered roller bearings for the front axles, improved ZF steering gearboxes and the availability of the high-horsepower Super 90 (simply named the "Super" after 1961) engine with a counterbalanced crankshaft.
The nomenclature of the 356 Speedster can be confusing. In essence, the Speedster, which evolved into the Convertible D, finally became the 356 Roadster. One performance model, three name variations (Speedster/Convertible D/Roadster). Just to add to the confusion, the final 356 body style was introduced with two engine cooling grilles, leading to the term twin-grille Roadster, used only for the 1962 models (all 1960 and ’61 356Bs have a single grille on the engine lid).
This Car
Of all the Porsche 356 roadsters made, this is one of the most rare and desirable. The last of the Speedster/Roadster line, it is a twin grille T-6 model with the even rarer high horsepower "Super" engine.
Chassis No. 89795 is one of only 249 T-6 Roadsters made by coach builder D'Ieteren Freres S.A., a Belgium coachworks which very briefly in 1961 built these roadsters for Porsche.

An engine rebuild by Costa Mesa's Euro Connection (1700 cc Big Bore Kit with new pistons and barrels) included Rimco heads with new valves. The cases were checked and did not require reboring, the crank was ground 10/10ths and balanced with the rods and flywheel.
At the beginning of 2000 this car was repainted in its original Ruby Red and received minor bodywork which replaced the rear pan and battery box. Complementing the Ruby Red exterior is a tan leather interior by Autos International, a firm whose work is considered to set the standard for concourse winning Porsches.
This immaculate Roadster is a direct descendant of the original Speedster, yet has many of the upgrades made to the final editions of the 356 line.
It was perhaps the last Porsche designed to be driven to the track, raced, and driven home.

I once owned a '62 T-6 twin-grille Roadster, #89787, and I'm sure it had drum brakes all around. Did they actually make some later Roadsters with front disks?

I had a 1961 Twin Grill Super 90 Roadster. It had light weight doors, bonnet and engine cover. I think they were aluminum?

I have a 1961 single-grill (89188), also originally Ruby Red, and w/ original S-90 and fog lights (as well as optional padded visors and ASH TRAY - wow). Drum brakes all around, steel doors, steel hood-bonnet. Roadsters came with vinyl, not leather, interiors, and vinyl boot. (leather was an option, I suppose).

After reading through your website,I do beleive I have a...356B-T6 convertible..I guess Roadster.Can someone help me to Identify my uncles car?I also need Estimated value.What chassis #'s woul be one of the 249 made? Any information would be highly appreciated...Thank..Andre Assam...lost in Florida!

In reflecting back on the early 60's, these classics were characteristic, of quality German engineering in every aspect.
This particular beauty, is reminiscent of the 55 Speedster, the 62 super 90, and the 64 carrera that I previously owned.
Having worked for Porche - Mercedes while attending college, afforded me a unique opportunity, to understand the inner workings of this unique automobile. I was privileged to learn from two Austrians, whom had worked for Porche in Germany.
I have been patiently keeping my eyes open, in hopes of locating a clean 1964 for the right price. In the end, patience generally always pays off.

I owned a '62 twin grill roadster. It was a Super 90 (90 DIN hp equivalent to SAE102 hp. There also was a Normal (60 hp)and
Super engine with 88 SAE hp. These cars had drum brakes all around--disc brakes were first offered with the 356C models in 1964; therefore, this car has been modified from stock. I think 40 '62 twin grill roadsters were imorted into the US.
