7.20.05 I just visited the online newspaper from Benson, AZ, and came across this news of Carl Haupt's plan (at age 79!!) to do a little mountain climbing. And learned of his admirable project, The Starfish Difference. Yeah, yeah, you say? It's not the WHAT, it is the WHY!! When I compare Starfish Difference's good works to the self-aggrandizing fools who invaded Cochise County last Spring I can barely restrain my rage. Yeah, you, Freakin' loonies-in-the-boonies pistol packing Project Minutemen morons, I'm talking about your uninvited invasion. Simply put, I am humbled. Please give this page a read. World record holder Carl Haupt: At it again
THELMA GRIMES Benson News-Sun Benson's Carl Haupt is going to climb an estimated 53,087 feet in four weeks to raise money for the poverty-stricken families of Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico. Haupt, 79, is calling the voyage Four Peaks in Four Weeks, and for every 1,000 feet he climbs, he is asking the public to donate $1. If he meets his goal, those pledging could be out as much as $53. His voyage starts on Aug. 4 with the Grand Canyon. The first week will consist of Haupt hiking the canyon at 6,869 feet. The next week, Haupt plans to make his way to California to climb Mt. Whitney. Whitney is the tallest peak in the United States at 14,491 feet. In the third week, Haupt will be in familiar territory when he attempts to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro at 19,340 feet. Last year, Haupt, a member of the organization known as the Starfish Difference, climbed the mountain. Not only did the climb earn him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the oldest to climb Kilimanjaro, but he also raised $13,000 for destitute families in Agua Prieta. "We have spent that money to get food, clothes and houses to the people that need it," Haupt said. "That's why I am doing this climb this year. The people still need help and we have spent that money." To cap off the four-week trip, Haupt will travel to Japan to take on Mount Fuji. The peak is estimated to be 12,387 feet. Except for the Grand Canyon, Haupt will be making the journey alone. To prepare for the journey, Haupt has hiked 400 miles around the San Pedro Valley. Word of his successes in climbing has gotten around and helped pay for this year's adventure. Haupt has spent a lot of his life's savings on helping the people of Agua Prieta, and this year could not afford the $10,000, but found help. In Salt Lake City, Utah, Haupt went to the Schiff Company headquarters. Schiff is a product that helps senior citizens with joint pain, Haupt said. For the last three years, Haupt has led the Starfish Difference, which primarily helps families across the border. He takes an average of three truckloads a week across, he said. This year, he took about 240 loads, he said. "As a Christian," Haupt said he feels compelled to help the families. "I am there helping put floors and roofs in their homes," he said. "I want to get water and as much as I can to these poor people. Some of them have no water and have to carry buckets several miles. They need my help, and the people that can help need to.
To learn more about Haupt and the Starfish Difference visit: www.starfishdifference.org Making a Difference One Person at a Time The Starfish Story: There once was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day he was walking along the shore, as he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day. So he began to walk faster to catch up. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man, and the young man wasn’t dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something, and very gently throwing it into the ocean. As he got closer he called out, "Good morning, what are you doing?" The young man paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish into the ocean." "I guess I should have asked; why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?" "The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don’t throw them then they’ll die." "But, young man, don’ t you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can’t possibly make a difference!" The young man listened politely, then bent down, picked another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves and said, "It made a difference for that one." Author Unknown There is something special in each and every one of us. We have all been gifted with the ability to make a difference. And if we can become aware of that gift, we gain through the strength of our visions, the power to shape the future. We must each find our starfish, and if we throw our stars wisely and well, the world will be blessed. Well, I just censored myself. I really shouldn't confuse this issue by telling the Minutemen what part of my anatomy they can kiss, so I changed my title to something a bit more...gentle. Don't like 'em, and from what I read and hear not many folks who live in the San Pedro Valley do (or did, the loonies are posing for the cameras in Texas these days). 7/22/2005 I think that if everyone just took one second to realize that at least in america we have a welfare system and in mexico they don't people would be rushing to donate. The picture on this page is just one of many. Carl Haupt is my grandpa and i've seen so many pics from down there. It truly is sad. I admire him for his selflessness, and mindset to make a difference in as many lives as he can 8/3/2005 10/6/2007 I had the honor of meeting Brother Haupt personally in our home and I could instantly sense his humility, tenderness in his voice when he talks about his project. If we could all be just a little like Carl Hapt we would live in a more positive environment with a lot less fear and a whole bunch of hope. 68.98.88.161 3/4/2011 I would be interested to hear Carl's opinion of the Minutemen...Carl, you carry the heart of Jesus Christ in your chest! 174.18.170.134 | ||
