Webmaster as a profession

The webmaster is also called the web architect, the web developer, the site author, or the website administrator. They are the person responsible for designing, developing, marketing, and maintaining a website.

I am often called upon to manage all aspects of web operations. As a generalist I use a broad skill set that includes expertise in handcoding HTML, PHP and PERL CGI programming, and graphic design.

My responsibilities may include the regulation and management of the access rights of different users of a website, refining site navigation, and ensuring satisfactory user experience.

In the early days of the web, the role of a "webmaster" encompassed all aspects of planning, coding, production, and user interface.

This is still typical for the smaller Web sites of many of my clients. For my clients with larger websites, I provide the service of website manager.

As a skilled copywriter I am frequently retained to create content for my client sites, while as a marketer I manage ongoing email and advertising campaigns.
